This work is inspired by Japanese avant-garde calligraphy (前衛書 Zenei-sho, or 墨象 Boku-shou). After World War II, the art of Japanese calligraphy was rapidly modernized. The ultimate result was avant-garde calligraphy that did not depict characters. They resembled the works of contemporary Western paintings of the same period, such as Abstract Expressionism and Art informel. In fact, some of the avant-garde calligraphy works were drawn with oil paint on canvas instead of Sumi ink on paper. So what is the difference between painting and calligraphy in those works?
A founder of avant-garde calligraphy said that the artistic essence of calligraphy art lies in the expression of a well-honed brushstroke, so the materials used are merely a medium. Then, is it possible for computer-drawn Bezier curves to become calligraphy art? This is an experiment in that.

This work is interactive. Clicking on the image or pressing the "m" key on the keyboard will randomly transform the shape of the strokes. There are 10 types of brushes. You can switch to other brushes by pressing the number keys on the keyboard (Touch devices switch with the direction of the swipe).
In addition, the strokes resize responsively to the window size, but the shape of the brush remains the same, so you can enjoy a different look by changing the screen's aspect ratio.
