I am, at heart, an experimental photographer, with perhaps the emphasis properly placed on experimental, as I work in all sorts of physical mediums.  I began to see digital methods as more than tools to a physical end at about the same time that I discovered NFTs.  The two threads arose independently, but once I became deeply interested in the freedom and opportunity of the NFT world, my interest in digital art as something in its own right necessarily expanded rapidly.  I started, simply enough, by offering the same photographic art that I printed and sold IRL as NFTs, and I enjoyed some success with that approach, though it left me feeling that I was riding on the surface of something that could be so much richer.  In the months since, I've added generative image composition to my practice, honing the ability to design layers that can be randomly stacked and yet reliably lead to worthwhile outcomes.  I've experimented with interactive art, in which I supplied sets of available layers for digital collages, allowing the collector to decide which options were chosen for the final work.  I've explored the use of AI to generate and breed images,  feeding my original work, images and text, into the AI engines along with AI products in long recursive exercises.  I've combined my visual art with bits of creative writing to create video short stories.  My budding ability to create algorithmic work is an exciting augmentation to everything that has come before.

My first task is to hone these new skills.  Wings, as my first algorithmic work, was intentionally constrained on several levels.  There were learning curves on so many different vectors that it seemed essential to take that stance.  The color palette is minimalist, and while that appeals to me on an aesthetic level, I want to gain full command of my color options.  Likewise, the composition of lines and shapes is constrained only to the point of preventing their extension beyond the canvas edge.  Again, more intentional compositional decisions must be mastered, as must the ability to create complex, organic shapes.  I hope to release my second piece soon with my progress on these fronts readily apparent.  Eventually, I want to begin to mix and remix my collage skills, my video skills, and my algorithmic skills.  I want to add animation, interaction, controlled evolution over time, and on and on.  The sky's the limit, and I am thrilled to be adding a new arrow to my quiver.

In this short essay, I'd like to provide a bit more of the backstory related to my project, Wings.  In previous articles about the project, I've written about my inertia in diving into fx(Hash) as a creator, and about how the project was constructed.  This time, I'd like to tell you more about how algorithmic art fits into my overall creative practice, and where I see myself going with this new medium.
